FedEx, one of the world's four express giants, opened it Asia Pacific Hub in the Logistics Processing Free-Trade Zone of Guangzhou Baiyun Airport in July 2005, covering 165.53 hectares of land. The construction includes apron, taxiways and sorting centers etc, with a total investment of 2.5 billion yuan. The construction started in January 2006.
According to the plan, construction of the industrial park will be divided into three stages: the initial stage will cover 6.6 square kilometers, and in 2010 achieve an expected output value of 33 billion yuan and provide 66,000 job opportunities; during the mid-term stage, 7.7 square kilometers will be added on, and in 2015 the output value will reach 119.5 billion yuan and 159,300 job opportunities will be provided; the long-term stage will make the total coverage to 20 square kilometers, with 287.6 billion yuan output value and no less than 280,000 job opportunities. By then, it will become an important pillar of China's air-bound economy in the central and southern region.
On Feb 6, 2009, FedEx transferred its operations at Subic Bay International Airport to Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport in southern China.
