Nearly half of the 89 environmental protection zones in North China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region have companies operating illegally, with a total of 663 firms involved, said an inspection report by a central government supervision team.
On Saturday, the Ministry of Environmental Protection-led inspection team issued its report on Inner Mongolia, which reveals that 41 of its 89 national- and regional-level protection zones - in which environmental rules are supposed to be stricter - have companies operating illegally, the Xinhua News Agency reported, adding that environmental regulations have failed to be enforced in most of the zones.
According to Xinhua, the inspection team pointed out that although Inner Mongolia has witnessed great improvements regarding environmental protection since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China in 2012, companies illegally occupying grassland, firms using polluting outdated equipment, ecosystem vulnerability and environmental degradation still poses a threat.
In addition, the team noted that some local governments rarely research environmental protection, while some have few environmental risk control measures.
Following the inspection team's recommendations, the Inner Mongolia government dealt with 1,637 pollution reports, shut down 362 illegal companies, and detained 57 people.
Hao Qingwen, deputy director of the Inner Mongolia Environmental Protection Bureau said that during this inspection, the public reported cases of industrial pollution, destruction of grassland and agricultural pollution, which affect residents' quality of life.
According to the inspection team, the regional government is required to submit their plan for improvements to the State Council and release it to the public within 30 days from Saturday.
The inspection team started their campaign on July 19 in eight provinces and regions, including Inner Mongolia, Northeast China's Heilongjiang Province and East China's Jiangxi and Jiangsu provinces.
The inspection team plans to spend two years conducting inspections nationwide, and it aims to push local governments to intensify enforcement of the new Environmental Protection Law, which went into effect on January 1, 2015, Xinhua said.
