电力装置通过裸导线架空线路的方式进行电力传输，而架空线路一般设置在离地面6～18m的空间范围内，这时雷电入侵波产生的雷电过电压会促使线路或者设备绝缘击穿，进而遭到破坏。利用高压防雷技术，通过给线路或者设备人为地制造绝缘薄弱点即间隙装置，间隙的击穿电压比线路或者设备的雷电冲击绝缘水平低，在正常运行电压下间隙处于隔离绝缘状态，当雷电发生时强大的过电压使间隙击穿，从而产生接地保护，起到保护线路或设备绝缘的作用。
间隙保护技术
间隙保护就是变压器中性点间隙接地保护装置。线路大体的两极由角形棒组成，一极固定在绝缘件上连接带电导线，另一极直接接地，间隙击穿后电弧在角形棒间上升拉长，当电弧电流变小时可以自行熄弧，间隙保护技术的优点是结构简单，运行维护量小，而缺点则是当电弧电流大到几十安以上时就没法自行熄弧，保护特性一般，而且间隙动作会产生截波，对变压器本身的绝缘也不利。
避雷器保护技术
避雷器是一种雷电流的泄放通道，也是一种等电位连接体，在线路上并联对地安装，正常运行下处于高阻抗状态。当雷电发生时，避雷器将雷电电流迅速泄入大地，同时使大地、设备、线路处在等电位上，从而保护设备免遭强电势差的损害。避雷器技术当然也存在很多的缺点，由于避雷器的选用受安装地点的限制，其当受到雷击或者雷击感应的能量相当大，靠单一的避雷器件很难将雷电流全部导入大地而自身不会损坏。另外，间隙保护和避雷器技术都是靠间隙击穿接地放电降压来起到保护的作用，这两种防雷技术往往会造成接地故障或者相间短路故障，所以不能达到科学合理的保护作用。
电力系统微机保护装置机保护是由高集成度、总线不出芯片单片机、高精度电流电压互感器、高绝缘强度出口中间继电器、高可靠开关电源模块等部件组成。微机保护装置主要作为110KV及以下电压等级的发电厂、变电站、配电站等，也可作为部分70V-220V之间电压等级中系统的电压电流的保护及测控。
原理
电力系统微机保护装置的数字核心一般由CPU、存储器、定时器/计数器、Watchdog等组成。目前数字核心的主流为嵌入式微控制器（MCU），即通常所说的单片机;输入输出通道包括模拟量输入通道（模拟量输入变换回路（将CT、PT所测量的量转换成更低的适合内部A/D转换的电压量，±2.5V、±5V或±10V）、低通滤波器及采样、A/D转换）和数字量输入输出通道（人机接口和各种告警信号、跳闸信号及电度脉冲等）。
