电源开关如铁壳开关，自动空气开关一般不适合用来频繁操作和远距离控制，而一般的电动机控制都有这方面的要求.交流接触器适用于频繁地遥控接通或断开交流主电路，它具有一般电源开关所不能实现的遥控功能，并具有操作频率高，工作可靠和性能稳定等优点.但交流接触器保护功能较差，不具备过载、短路等保护功能，而这些功能又是通常电动机控制回路所必须的一般电源开关，特别是自动空气开关，它的保护机构完善齐全，能对电动机进行有效保护.所以需由两者配合使用才能做到控制灵活、保护齐备.
